Grunberg Stimulus Plan Hits Somerset Kentucky

Somerset, Kentucky, 3/13/09

Since November 2008, when the Historic Somerset Refinery was purchased by Michael Grunberg, managing principal of Grunberg Realty, work to rebuild and improve the refinery has been underway.  There has been over $3,000,000 invested in the restoration of the refinery so far and Grunberg says "There is more to come."

A majority of the repair work being done in the refinery is to restore extensive damage caused by a small fire in October 2007.  The Hydrotreater and Reformer units, as well as supporting units have been replaced and outside welding crews are working daily to restore and repair the piping.

A goal to prevent future down-time as well as provide a safer environment for employees requires that the entire facility be thoroughly inspected.  Many areas of the refinery that have not gotten the attention needed in the past due to lack of funding are being examined, calling upon outside companies as far away as the Gulf coast to inspect each vessel for metal thickness and corrosion.  Storage tanks used for crude oil and refined goods have been neglected in the past, therefore inspection, cleaning, and repairs are being performed daily.  Instrumentation is not only being repaired but in many areas replaced bringing better technology to the refinery, resulting in higher efficiency and safety.

Investments are being made in areas outside of the refinery as well.  Painting and maintenance repairs have been done to the building that had been neglected in the past and a new roof was recently installed on the main office building.  The Somerset Energy Refining team has also undergone some changes, hiring past employees of Somerset Oil when possible as well as bringing in some outside talent insuring the success of the refinery.

Associated company Somerset Transport is working hard at getting their fleet of trucks and trailers ready for the road and the startup of Green Hills Environmental is well under way with key personnel and equipment being added.  Banking relationships have been established in the local area and accounts have been opened at Cumberland Security Bank and Citizens National Bank.  It is only a matter of time before relationships with customers and crude oil producers are built once again insuring the success of Somerset Energy Refining.
